Why use biochar in green solutions in an urban environment?

As biochar has a good water-holding capacity, it is possible to increase the soil’s water-holding capacity by incorporating biochar into the growing substrate, thereby improving and ensuring the plants’ access to water. The plants can then survive for extended periods without rain, and plantings that require irrigation can be watered less frequently.

WHAT WE DO IN THE PROJECT REST TILL BÄST

Overview

Within Rest till Bäst, we will be conducting cultivation experiments with biochar in several different types of systems for urban greenery, including city trees, green roofs, green walls, rain beds and urban meadows. We will study the effects of biochar on plant establishment and growth and then evaluate the extent of nutrient leakage in systems where biochar has been introduced. We will also be testing a completely new method for adding biochar to existing plantings. If this method is proved effective, the area that can be treated with biochar will increase significantly.
